Coffee is the heart of Caffè Casa.

When John and Kathy started the business twenty years ago, they sought out the expertise at Paramount Coffee in Lansing to create their own signature blends and roasts.

They wanted to develop a roast that is bold and strong but with a very smooth finish.

To achieve that, they worked closely with Angelo Oricchio, then the director of coffee at Paramount, one of the oldest and largest roasters in the midwest.

“It helped that he grew up on a family coffee plantation,” Kathy says. “He's very skilled.”

Oricchio, who traces his roots to the Brazilian coffee-growing region, is Paramount’s resident expert in cupping, the art of
evaluating the tastes and aromas of brewed coffee.  Now the chief executive of the company, he was the perfect choice to help develop John and Kathy’s vision for their coffees.

Caffè Casa’s daily offerings are a Colombian Supremo and a fair trade organic dark Peruvian.  All of the espresso drinks feature the shop’s custom blends and roasts in regular and decaf.

“We make a huge variety of drinks within the espresso genre,” Kathy says. “Our daily brews are down to two, so you can count on a fresh hot cup!”

Besides the espresso drinks, the shop has pioneered several other unique creations.

Caffè Casa is the only place in town you can get a bacon-flavored mocha, or a breakfast latte laced with hints of bacon and waffles.

The Caramel Creme is a luxurious experience – white chocolate, caramel sauce, espresso, steamed milk and whipped cream.

The dark hot chocolate is divine. Customers rave about it – 79 percent cocoa dark chocolate morsels are heated with a restricted amount of milk to create a very rich chocolate, leaving tiny melted bits for the finish. Topped with whipped cream and chocolate sauce.

There is also a frozen dirty chai with the shop’s homemade espresso cubes blended in. It’s extremely popular with customers, a combination of chai – black tea, cardamom, ginger, nutmeg, cinnamon, a little pepper, honey and vanilla –

and crushed espresso ice cubes.

Those same espresso cubes are also used in the frozen mochas, made from scratch, no mixes.

Lemon chillers are created with freshly squeezed lemonade and all-natural lemon syrup sourced from Torani in San Francisco, blended nice and thick.

Caffè Casa also features a spinach smoothie with raspberries, strawberries, blueberries, peaches, bananas, Greek yogurt and 100 percent fruit juice. Shelled hemp seeds – one of the world’s most nutritious – are blended in for extra protein.

Seasonal drinks include hot cider, lemonade and a lime rickey, and refreshing Italian sodas are always on the menu. Drink extras include soy milk, decaf espresso, whipped cream, extra espresso, flavor shots, honey, and almond milk.
